Water-based or silicone lubricant: which one to use
Use water-based lubricant with toys, condoms and for everyday sex: it is safe with everything and washes off. Use silicone lubricant when you need it to last, for anal play or in water, but never on a silicone toy. If you want one bottle for everything, water-based is the safer choice.
When is water-based lubricant the right choice?
Water-based is the all-rounder. It is compatible with latex condoms and every toy material, it does not stain, and it rinses off with water. Its one weakness is that it dries out with longer use and may need reapplying. In our range that is pjur Aqua, the pjur Woman line, and pjur med for sensitive skin.
When is silicone lubricant better?
Silicone lubricant does not dry out, so a small amount lasts a whole session. That makes it the choice for anal play, for use in the shower or bath, and for anyone who finds water-based lube needs constant topping up. It is condom-safe. It must not be used on silicone toys, because it can degrade their surface over time. Ours: pjur Original, pjur Basic and pjur Man Extremeglide.
What is a hybrid lubricant?
A hybrid mixes a water base with a small amount of silicone: longer-lasting than pure water-based, still easy to wash off, and usually fine with toys. It is a good compromise if you want one bottle. Check the product page before using a hybrid with a silicone toy.
Is lubricant safe with condoms?
Water-based and silicone lubricants are both safe with latex condoms and are in fact recommended, because friction is the main reason condoms break. Never use oil, petroleum jelly, lotion or anything oil-based with a latex condom: oil weakens latex within minutes.
What about relaxing or anal lubricants?
